HEY! I’M MIRIAM

I’m so thankful that you’re here so I can share with you what motivated me to set up Authentic Love Academy.

I’ve always been a sensitive person who feels their emotions at a deep level. I feel sadness and joy intensely. I easily pick up on the emotions of others around me. That’s why people, oftentimes who don’t know me well, open up and tell me their innermost secrets.

I was planning to study psychology at college until a teacher at my school who gave a weekly ‘guidance class’ to final year students persuaded me not to. I went to a Catholic school for 14 years in a small town in Ireland. The teacher was a nun. Why I allowed her to influence me on such an important matter instead of listening to the urgings of my heart I’ll never know. All I can remember about the conversation was that she said I’d end up working in Mountjoy Prison (in Dublin, Ireland) with hardened criminals. That sounded like working in Alcatraz to my 17-year old mind. Instead I went to business school which seemed like a safer bet and later became a certified accountant. I went to London to study Corporate Treasury and I worked in several finance roles over a period of 14 years.

I never felt I belonged. I felt disconnected from work…and increasingly from myself.

Then my world fell apart.

It was the height of the global economic crisis at the end of 2008. I finished work one Tuesday evening as normal. I locked my office door leaving my computer and work papers on the desk. At the time I didn’t know it, but I wasn’t coming back. My career in finance was over. A new path was opening up for me.

I didn’t go into work the next day as overnight my personal world imploded. I’d met my husband at a work function, 12 years earlier. He was a banker. By the age of 29 I was married with a toddler and a baby. My days were frantic – small kids in daycare and later on at school, long commutes to work, and a husband who worked 70 hours a week in a high-pressure environment. He was heading for burnout but refused to slow down. Then, without warning, he took his own life.

In one day, my sense of safety and belonging disappeared.

My sons, aged 6 and 7, were broken-hearted and frightened. Daddy had left them whilst they were at school. He hadn’t said goodbye. Did he not love us? Why did he leave us? Questions their young minds couldn’t make sense of. And I had no way of making sense of it for them or taking their pain away.

Christmas was approaching just a few weeks after his death, so I brought them to see Santa thinking it would lift all our moods. When it came to our turn, my 7-year old sat on Santa’s lap. When Santa asked what presents he wanted for Christmas he replied “I don’t want anything this year Santa, I just want two minutes with Daddy. That’s all, just two minutes”. To make sure Santa understood his request, he held up two little fingers to Santa’s face. Santa didn’t know what to say. He looked uncomfortably at me and an awkward silence passed between us. No plastic toy was going to distract this child from his loss.

Continuing to work would have given me some structure and distracted me from the mess that our lives had descended into, but my heart told me that I needed to be at home.

I knew one day I would come out of this experience stronger and wiser, that heartbreak had lessons to teach me if I could stay open and curious. I buried myself in books and courses on self-development, positive psychology and spirituality. I found my tribe at a diploma course in Spiritual Development where I learnt what it was to be vulnerable, real and courageous. Over the course of two years in a remote location in the mountains in Co.Wicklow we delved deep inside our wounds and supported each other.

I left the world of figures to explore the much more fascinating world of feelings. I started with myself, with my own inner world and repairing my fractured sense of self. This has given me a solid base to work from to help other women seeking to create a meaningful life after heartbreak, loss or betrayal. I’ve been to rock bottom. I know what it’s like to feel broken, vulnerable, and hopeless. I also know how empowering it is to come out the other side bearing the gifts of courage, resilience, and authenticity.

Ten years have passed since the events that catapulted me on this journey to ‘undress the soul’. (Rumi). I didn’t rush the process as I knew that the only way to get the gifts of rock bottom was to go through the pain and dive into those places you’d rather run from.

My wounds have healed and I’m ready to support other women ready to peel back the layers to uncover their authentic and courageous selves.

It’s time to put my hard-won lessons to use.

As Bréne Brown said:

Midlife: when the Universe grabs your shoulders and tells you “I’m not f-ing around, use the gifts you were given.”

And so it was that after spending some time ‘f-ing around’ and resisting the call of the Universe, the idea of an online school for spiritually-minded women began to take shape. In early 2018 Authentic Love Academy was born with the mission to help women everywhere fall in love with themselves.

The only person who is truly holding you back is you. No more excuses. It’s time to change. It’s time to live life at a new level.
